Hollywood is Afraid to Make Good Movies (8-23-26)
Tonight, I watched The Curve (1998) and Jawbreaker (1999). I was particularly fascinated by Jawbreaker. These movies among many others highlighted a very intriguing time period of film and changing sentiment built on what some people have coined "Dark Americana". Basically in that vein where indie, dark comedy, and cult classic intersect. It always feels like such a flashbang to watch some of these movies where they kill people, genuine terror plays out, but the storytelling or environment doesn't come right out and slap you in the face telling you, "THIS IS BAD AND SCARY". Because it isn't a matter of being an ethical dilemma; it's a movie and a story, and it's people trying to navigate a situation. I don't really know what you would call these specifically, 90s gothic? It's not just a 90s thing though. Dark comedy. Idk. Probably like 90% of movies made in the last 15 years hand hold too much, they're too polished, overly produced, and the storylines are retold or told in such a preachy, linear manner to me. When people figure out pigs eat slop, they start feeding us slop. So my message for you today is: be very critical, culturally snobby, contrarian, pretentious, and elitist. You will only get fed slop otherwise.
Terrible Sleep, Yet We Persist (8-22-2026)
I woke up today around 5:00 AM, and I couldn't go back to sleep. So, I thought it was finally a good time to bust out my audio equipment and capture the critters before and after nautical twilight - roughly around 5:30 - 6:00 AM. I'm a huge audiophile, so I like soundscapes and music of all kinds and incorporating it into different creative outlets. I'm exhausted from the poor sleep, still have to get a run in, it's raining and storming, and I just drank my 3rd cup of coffee. But we must persist. I really like this Neocities thing. It's such a feel-good outlet to meet people around the world and share my creative intrigue and passions. Anyways, here is a ~10 min clip of nature as it is waking up before we do. Have a cup of coffee or tea, and enjoy :)
I Hate Working (8-20-2026)
I plan to retire by the time I am 38. People always scoff at me in disbelief when I say this, but they must either be an expensive person or bad with money. I hate working so much that I have been devoted to being pretty thrifty/economical/cheap (whatever you want to label it) and pretty financially savvy since I was like, 16 years old. In recent years, I have definitely started splurging a lot more on the things that are important to me. Combining being thrifty, economically savvy, fighting for your money, and ruthless investing from a young age takes most of the financial pressures out of life that most people worry about I believe. And I have done this to get out of the mindless corporate slavery as soon as possible. This is what I tell people: I got my first got when I was 16 years old as a server at a restaurant. On day 1, I thought it was the worst experience a person could go through. It does severe mental damage to the human spirit. Particularly in the service industry where your coworkers are pretty toxic, the customers come in with the expectation of treating you as a lesser, your boss is an asshole, and the reward for your effort is simply not worth the effort. Anyhow, as a young man at the time, I thought that maybe it would get better over time. Perhaps, I was being melodramatic like I usually am based on first impressions. Fast forward to 2026, where I am working a big boy corporate job at the age of 30 almost 31 - my sentiment towards working is largely the exact same, or I even hold more animosity towards the workforce. They say it gets better, but it doesn't. It stays the same or gets worse in one form or another. Anyways, I'm typing this while actively at work, I'm going to retire at 38, and I can't wait to get out of the workforce.
Below, the outfit of the day is: Green Casa Piccante Jacquard Shirt by Percival, Athletic Taper Dad Jeans by GAP, Electric Orange Revive Shoes by Kane, and I'm sporting the Tudor Black Bay 58 GMT watch today.
Old School Runescape is Still the Greatest Game Ever Made (8-19-2026)
Old School RuneScape, 2007scape, is still the greatest game ever made to this day. Nostalgia do be talking, but I have loved this game since Runescape Classic. This game was very likely my first ever legitimate addiction in my life. I would be FIENDING to go back to my grandma's house to use her computer to play the game when I was much younger. And when I couldn't play it because my family did not have a computer quite yet, I would be thinking about playing it and planning what to do to use my time wisely. And when my time on the computer was up, my brother would get on his account, and I'd just watch him play. However, my mom never bought us a membership, so we would just mess around f2p. In my current adult life, I have come and gone with Runescape accounts. But from August 2024 - October 2024, I finally set out with a mission to do what my childhood self always wanted: beat all the quests and get the quest cape. So in that time period, I played relentlessly to speedrun getting the quest cape. And by October 2024, I had it; it was all mine. I don't know your experience with the game, but you may think the quests are easy for such a simple game. Almost all of the quests are quite simple: click - kill boss. All I gotta say is get the quest cape yourself. The quest Desert Treasure 2 is surprisingly no joke - it took me like 4 days and hundreds of deaths to get through it. It is quite challenging if all you remember of the game is skilling, click-killing enemies, and fucking around the GE. After that quest, I eventually got into some bossing and got proficient at what I practiced, so I eventually got pretty "decent" at the game. I've not played in several months because I got really burnt out on Corrupted Gauntlet. Still haven't gotten the bowfa lmfao
If you've been looking for a sign to get back into Old School Runescape or giving it a shot for the first time, this is it, and I urge you to go for the quest cape! And yes, my username is EdgyDildo lol
The internet is no longer fun (8-18-2026)
When I use the internet in the modern era, I click the same 10 things on repeat like a Pavlovian dog. No thought, just click same thing, expect different result. In the early 2000s, when the internet was confined to a single unit in your parent's or grandparent's house, and you had to take turns on it with family, I remininesce on all of the times I had. It wasn't just YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Twitch, banking/corporate websites, and so on. It had so much personality, exploration, fun, and mystery for better or for worse. And there was such pleasure in the simplicity of it, nobody taking themselves too seriously. At one moment, I was like, 10 years old, and I was really interested in all of the flash games and animations, and I dabbled in Pivot animation and their forums and websites because my mom wouldn't buy me Flash multimedia software which was expensive to be fair. And I met hundreds of people from around the world and chatted with them all the time over animation. The modern internet has become too consolidated, corporate, and polished. There are still ways of achieving this nostalgic retrophilia of course, but they are often sparsely populated. However, neocities seems to be a spot with likeminded people with this philosophy, so that is what inspired me to make this. I don't take myself too seriously, enjoy the mystery and exploration of the internet, and hope I can connect with people who share this feeling. And, I have always loved coding along the HTML/CSS/Javascript structures.
